Eulogy for My Brother

[hypothetical piece]

Mum said this was sparked by talk about a eulogy, so here’s what I would say.

Eulogy for █████ █████

█████ was an upstanding citizen. I use these words in particular because I think that’s how █████ would put it. It’s succinct, accurate and humble.

He might also add that he liked a good laugh, because █████ understood emotional rhythm in a way that’s rare among the rest of us.

This was part of his marvellous wonder. He could instinctively break down anything into its separate parts, analyse them with an astounding amount of diligence and intelligence, seamlessly put them back together, then chuckle at the overall silliness of it all.

If you didn’t understand, he’d try to help you. It’s this, I think, that most people will remember █████ by. How caring he was. He’d go out of his way to help, but honestly, I don’t know if he really knew it.

I don’t know if he knew how much he gave. How enormous his heart was. How much of an impact he had, in millions of little ways. But he definitely saw it in other people.

He saw deeply into you. He saw your heart and your mind, he saw the warmness of your spirit. He noticed things nobody else could see. If you’re reading this then █████ was your friend, which means there’s something resoundingly special in you. You might not know it, but he did.

█████ was a guardian. He was a carer and a caretaker. It’s a darker world without him here. Because, not only was he so beautifully, fundamentally human, but because he’s the one who kept the lights on.

Happy birthday █████ 🙂
