You can witness this concept in yourself quite easily. First you’ll need a baseline: How do you feel about yourself on a regular good day? Choose a time when you’re awake, alert, and free any duties or other pressures.
Consider both your self-perception and your memories. Below are some prompts that might help you investigate these feelings. You can write down your observations if you like, as you might forget your answers later.
- How do you feel about yourself?
- What have you remembered recently, while in this neutral state?
Once you have that point of reference, find a time when your mood is different. Be sure to capture both negative and positive.
For example, for negative moods, try to catch yourself when you’re feeling frustrated, or one of the many types of being sad.
For positive moods, you can elevate your own mood by saying to yourself “I am a good person” and believing it; then see how that affects your self-perception and memories.
